The best shape for your pond, is the shape that inspired you to build one in the first place!
The minimum area for your pond, if you plan to include fish, is to allow for the turning radius of the adult sized fish. Usually a 4' diameter circle is enough for an adult koi (12 lb.) or a 2' diameter circle for an adult tilapia (1 lb.).
Scale your pond's water volume to the total number of adult sized fish you want to raise.
For koi, make the pond 1,000 gallons minimum plus 200 gallons for every additional koi.
For tilapia it is 500 gallons for the first 20 adult fish, plus 3 gallons for each additional tilapia.
